Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. It often appears as pimples, blackheads, or whiteheads, and commonly affects the face, back, and chest. The main causes of acne include an overproduction of sebum (an oily substance produced by the sebaceous glands), the buildup of dead skin cells, and the growth of Propionibacterium acnes (a type of bacteria) in clogged pores. Hormonal changes, especially during puberty, menstruation, or pregnancy, can increase sebum production, making acne more likely. Genetics, stress, certain medications, and diet (particularly foods high in refined sugars and dairy) can also contribute.
Several treatments are available to manage and reduce acne, ranging from over-the-counter (OTC) options to prescription medications. OTC treatments often include ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, which kills bacteria and dries excess oil, and salicylic acid, which helps unclog pores. For more severe acne, dermatologists may prescribe topical retinoids, which promote cell turnover, or antibiotics to reduce bacteria and inflammation.
Newer therapies like chemical peels, laser treatments, and light therapy offer additional options, especially for individuals who don't respond to standard treatments. It’s important to consult a healthcare provider to determine the most effective treatment based on the type and severity of acne. Early and consistent treatment can prevent scarring and improve overall skin health.
At ClearSkin Studio we recommend a free consultation, followed by a package of skincare services, which commonly include Microdermabrasion, Peels and LED sessions. -
Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that primarily affects the face, causing redness, visible blood vessels, and sometimes small, red, pus-filled bumps. The exact cause of rosacea is not fully understood, but a combination of genetic, environmental, and immune system factors is believed to play a role.
Several triggers can worsen rosacea symptoms. Common ones include sun exposure, stress, hot or cold weather, spicy foods, alcohol, and certain skincare products. A key factor in rosacea may be an overactive immune response, leading to inflammation. The presence of a skin mite called Demodex folliculorum is also more common in people with rosacea and may contribute to the condition. Additionally, abnormalities in facial blood vessels may lead to persistent redness and flushing.
Rosacea is more common in fair-skinned individuals and typically develops between the ages of 30 and 50. There are different subtypes, including erythematotelangiectatic rosacea (characterized by redness and visible vessels), papulopustular rosacea (similar to acne), phymatous rosacea (thickened skin), and ocular rosacea (affecting the eyes).
There is no cure for rosacea, but several treatments help manage symptoms. Topical treatments like metronidazole, azelaic acid, and ivermectin can reduce inflammation and pustules. Oral antibiotics such as doxycycline are used for more severe cases. Brimonidine and oxymetazoline topical gels can temporarily reduce redness by constricting blood vessels. Laser therapy or intense pulsed light (IPL) is effective for reducing visible blood vessels and persistent redness.
Lifestyle changes also play an important role. Avoiding known triggers, using sunscreen daily, and choosing gentle skincare products can help control flare-ups. Because rosacea can impact self-esteem and quality of life, seeking professional guidance for tailored treatment is recommended. With proper management, most people can keep symptoms under control.
Here at ClearSkin Studio, we recommend an initial consultation, and more often than not, this is followed by a package of skincare treatments, which typically involve IPL Skin Rejuvenation combined with LED treatment, all tailored to the individual’s requirements. -
Age spots, also known as liver spots or solar lentigines, are flat, brown, grey, or black spots that typically appear on the skin in areas exposed to the sun, such as the face, hands, shoulders, and arms.
Age Spots are most commonly caused by over exposure to the sun and UV light, which accelerate the formation of Melatonin. In addition, Age Spots are often a natural by-product of getting older as the skin loses its ability to recover and heal as it did in the past.
Alternatively, Age Spots could be caused by simple genetics, and commonly by hormonal changes such as those brought about by pregnancy.
There are various types of skincare treatment for Age Spots, ranging from topical treatments such as Hydroquinine, Retinols, or Vitamin C Serums, to professional skin peels, microneedling, microdermabrasion and even cryotherapy.
Here at ClearSkin Studio, we take each case as a one-off and determine a program of skincare treatment that is best for you as an individual.
